Looking For The Promised Land Poem by Mary Champion

Looking For The Promised Land

For the most part, life leaves us bewildered,
so rarely can we find the rationale.
Maybe that is why we're oft embittered,
confusion undermining our morale.

Something left my heart in shattered pieces
and left me lost, out in the wilderness.
Searched to find effective panaceas,
explored the outer world without success.

There seemed to be no answer to the questions
that I was asking on my heart's behalf.
Something interfered with my perceptions
when I was focussed solely on myself.

Finally, discouraged by my failure,
I turned back to the questions of my youth.
Here, at last, I found a sort of saviour -
I could believe in this - the bigger truth.

***

Who is Man? and what is Man? How did he come to be?
Can we ever justify the pain and misery?
Where the start? and what the end? Why this restless seeking?
convinced there will be answers - secrets someone's keeping.

For decades I asked questions and hoarded what I found -
some trivial, amusing, some utterly profound.
Recorded it in bits on-line and hid it in the cloud.
I rarely found the courage to speak of it aloud.

But somehow it brought healing to my lonely, shattered heart,
though I never found the answers I asked for at the start.
But still I found a sort of peace I wish that I could share.
If I only I had the courage to stand up and declare

that there is a purpose in this temporary hell
and, as the prophetess declared, 'All things shall be well. '
But I don't have charisma to give weight to the word.
Found a way to calm our fear, but fear it won't be heard.

I hope there's someone out there, who's found the answers too,
someone who has courage and will see their mission through
to still the fear and dry the tears -to meet our destiny
unite the scattered pieces of the God we're meant to be.
