She said to him, 'I search for the way'
He saw her across the wooden spiked fence
He was a beast and it was that night in May
'Draw near lest I'm unable to wipe your tears'
She was nascent and slender and tender
A shed leaf from the tree of innocence
He looked away and smiled at his luck-clever
A tear fell off the skies from among the angels
He was another beast too and dirty
She lifted her skirt and climbed his arms
He was another beast and waited sentry
Beast said to another beast, 'Drop her that we may dance'
And beast fought with another beast bloody
She sat on the dung-floor and cried and shook her head
Hair and sweat and dirt and blood and skin
Beast and another beast lay at her feet dead
She still treads a path of broken dreams and thorns
She still walks at night and sleeps at day
She thinks she has taken Jupiter's Curse
She said to me, 'I search for the way'.
