Lost In Conversation Poem by Lexie Pauli

Lost In Conversation

"So…"

1000 miles, maybe 2
You're both lost, alone

Nothing makes you smile
No one knows
It's like a twisting knife in the chest
Or nearly collapsed lungs under the pressure
Everything has disappeared

Things aren't so easy anymore
Are they? You ponder
You are frozen
Nothing is okay
You know it isn't right

Why can't you smile?
Why don't you go out anymore?
What happened to you?
The room spins
The questions flood your ears
Never making it much further
Your lips quiver, you bite your tongue

Your whole body begins to shake, realizing
No one is there to catch them
That was your job
But now they are out of your grasp

You're hurting
So you seem to forget, they are too
You both knew this wouldn't be easy
But it was what they needed to do

You fought and yelled
Never out of anger
They had expected that
Things were left
With only love and tears

So late one night
You disappeared
Drove all night
Crying half way there, laughing the other half
You can't believe it
All this way for
Good-bye?

"Hey? "
"So…"
"Where are they? "

That's when you realized
You never left that booth.
