Marduk Poem by D A Phinney

Marduk

So they cried Freedom!
And God said Yes, I grant you that
And they left off from Babel in many directions.
Flawed and in his image He had made them
And having denied them the bootstrap, Mr. Paradox
Rained brimstone on the ignorant
Foolish enough to openly exhibit their humanity
Making permanent example of whosoever
Bore witness to the vile and vindictive deed.
Down through the centuries
He'd pop up here and there
Now a fire, then a whirlwind
Dropping off the odd plague or two
Occasionally assigning a few score years of tasks
To some poor soul
Inbetween catastrophes.
But then, having lost interest
Or lost control, He backed off
And their wisdom began to blossom
In the deserted Earth.
And they made discussion of Him
And His ways
And rejected them
But accepted Him as God-Example-Concept.
Then through humanity bore they the
Tempered God
Who would not war
Who would not kill
Who would not destroy
Who would not take revenge
Who would not compel
Nor enslave, but
Who was human
Who allowed true freedom.

And they revered the Understanding God
But they never forgot the Old One
The Angry and Vengeful God
And they did prepare themselves
Harnessing the secret fire and brimstone
And the plagues
Should He dropp by again.
