Martyrdom - Poem by Karnail Singh Heirwale

MARTYRDOM

How often
One martyr after another
Comes forward
Willingly or unwillingly
To the stake
Prepared by the greats
Who know
How to rein the horse
At the point
Where it can
Trample underfoot
One and all
For a few crumbs
Without a tear or sigh
Ghosts of Huss and Joan
From a distant cry.
