Mission Accomplished Poem by Mary Champion

Mission Accomplished

Since he was just a boy
young Boris had a dream,
a thing to bring him joy,
a plan, a plot a scheme.

The king of all the world
was what he longed to be.
He would not be deterred
though he lacked the quality.

He started close to home
and lied his way to get
elected as PM
and win the Brexit Bet.

As 2020 dawned,
his perfect vision won,
the creeps and yes-men fawned -
amazed at what he'd done.

But pride, they always say,
precedes a painful fall
and he never guessed what lay
beyond that Chinese wall.

A virus would ensure
that power had a price,
and other things in store
that were not very nice.

As deaths began to mount
and people hid indoors,
we started losing count
of the failures and the flaws.

He blustered and he bragged
then he broke the rules he'd made.
And his actions always lagged
or they didn't make the grade.

When, finally, it seemed
that Covid might be tamed,
he postured and he preened,
still refusing to be blamed

for the parties and the quiz -
not one of which occurred.
Morality like his
has lines a little blurred.

And Brexit didn't come
as easy or as sweet,
for some things he had done
were stoking up the heat

across the Irish Sea -
a protocol would cause
a lot of misery
and threats to break some laws.

Then, not his fault this time,
the rising price of gas,
meant we would have to find
a lot more ready cash.

He did a sort of bodge
that might have helped a few
and kept his fingers crossed
we'd somehow muddle through.

But Putin - overdosed
on steroids - raged and swore
then did his uttermost
to start a third world war.

With cruelty we thought
we would not see again
in Europe, then he brought
sheer Hell into Ukraine.

And now the price of gas
is going through the roof
and all that Russian cash
will only serve to prove

the Tories are in hock
to Putin and his mates
and others must take stock
of where theirs originates.

They say you should take care
of what you're wishing for
cos the answer to your prayer
could cost you a lot more.

As he eyes the tarnished throne
of the King of all the World
he might wish he had known
of the price to be incurred
