I'm with Billy Collins on this,
I too wonder about angels -
I ask- Does Eternity drag?
I mean it goes on a long time
and I don't suppose it changes
because it's supposed to be perfect.
At least that's what they always say,
so change could only make it worse.
And don't forget the heralding -
pointlessly proclaiming warnings
to we irredeemable men
who rarely listen or take heed.
Then there's all that praising the Lord,
immortal sycophants with wings,
doing their best to appease God
when he gets wrathful and threatens
to hurl his thunderbolts earthwards.
If they'd pleaded for dinosaurs,
way, way back in the Cretaceous,
Humans wouldn't even exist,
with our prodigious talent
for sinning and provoking wrath.
Then, maybe, they'd get a day off -
time to relax, take in a show.
They could go clubbing - and why not?
A welcome change from endless hymns -
something with rhythm and a beat
they could dance to on those pinheads.
