My World Poem by Shirley Harrison

My World

My World
If I could write one single play
and share it with the world
it would be all about the
magic of imagination

in which
kindness was a ruler
happiness was a given
and sadness was unheard of

the world would be a magic carpet
that we could all, together sit on

clocks would turn back
instead of moving forward
at least on those happy days
capturing the best in every corner

water would be Champagne
Champagne would be water
Yes, do have a think about this one

dogs would work in the office
so we'd have more time to walk ourselves
Cats would drive the bus
singing songs of diamonds and pearls
Parrots would bring the post
and crocodiles would milk the cows
Monkey's, well imagine that one for yourselves…

Camels would sing in bars
there's one, he's called Giovanni
he smokes a fat cigar
he wears a pair of ray bans
and plays an old guitar

every home would have
a laughing kookaburra
the doorbell, he would be
he'd simply wish to greet us
then take to his perch back in the tree

did I tell you about my famous chair?
Shakespeare is its name
sometimes when I wish to write
the Bard himself appears
we'd read his greatest poems
he'd teach me, oh so much
we'd have a garden shin-dig
and finish it off with rum punch

In my own great play
I wish for nothing to be real
If I keep tap dancing
my imagination remains surreal.
