Need Poem by B. V. Dahlen

Need

You entered my life
small, fragile, dependent
for love and warmth
and nourishment.
You needed me.

Then, as you grew
your world enlarged.
You noticed other things,
but still you needed me.

Now, in your darkened room,
I stand in silence
looking down as you sleep.
Soon you won't need me.

You'll turn to others
in your grief, and share
your joys, discoveries
and childhood toys,
all these with others.

Someday you'll stand,
and smiling, wait
as one in white
walks to you.
Then you'll need her.

I only hope
that when you're grown
and gone,
your child you'll bring to me.
For then,
I'll need him.
