'Nineteen Eighty-Four' Poem by Sandy Fulton

'Nineteen Eighty-Four'

Forty years ago I dreamed a nightmare
That our country would some day be poor.
But I kept buying cheap
And stayed sound asleep,
While the boardrooms connived.
Now we're there! We've arrived
In Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Twenty years past, coughed up a nightmare,
Being drowned by an inquisitor;
Choking and gasping,
And finally grasping
That it might well be me
Without law, without plea,
In Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Fifteen years ago I had a nightmare
Of young deaths in another grim war.
Although I revive
And still am alive,
Too many are dead,
They have shattered and bled
In Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Ten years past I drowned in a nightmare
Where water surged up through the floor.
Rich men without pity
Were flooding our city
With sea-surge and storming
From their global warming
In Nineteen Eighty-Four!

Six years ago, woke from a nightmare
Of dark youths in prisons or dead.
I knew none of that hell,
Thought all remained well,
While they rotted in jail
'Cause their skins weren't pale
In Nineteen Eighty-Four

Two years ago I had a nightmare
Of wearing a mask on my face,
Since a virus could kill me,
Amazing! I'm still me!
But mad fools deny it
And think they defy it,
In Nineteen Eighty-Four!

Three weeks ago I had a nightmare
Of stolen elections and more,
While Senators screeched,
Big Brother, impeached,
Claimed a crown, and told lies
That stank to the skies
In Nineteen Eighty-Four.

We all need a world without nightmares
Or we'll end like the dinosaur.
Come alive, come awake,
Until we can shake
Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Come alive, come awake,
And forever forsake
Nineteen Eighty-Four!
