Nocturne Iv, The Firefly Poem by Kate Wiley

Nocturne Iv, The Firefly

While the darkness creeps descending
Radiant skies have faded slowly
In the mead and forest lowly
Cov'ring hill and dale in night
Slowly from the grass ascending
One wee flame appears in flight
Tiny sprite in all his might
Seeking sustenance somewhere
Hov'ring, blinks his little light;
Some mystic signal he is sending
When he drifts into the air.
Other lights appearing with him
Shining, fragile, light and fair-
Are they ghosts, or spectres flying
From the graves of lost ones rising
Vanished into yonder hollow?
Still, one questing firefly hovers
Blinking, calling me to follow-
Follow? Nay, I know not how.
Then in evening breezes gentle
Soft with effervescent mantle,
Finding forest glades so fair
They to night's eternal flow
But we, ah, where? We, ah, where?
