Of A Judge And A Theefe Poem by Nicholas Bacon

Of A Judge And A Theefe

A corrupte Judge sayde to an arrante theefe,
Whye shouldeste thou not dye by lawe of the lande,
Beinge caste by twelue of an open mischeife?
I ame a clarke quothe he, and doe vnderstande.
Arte thou soe? quothe the Judge, then tell me this,
What difference betwene Fur and Latro is:
Ohe quothe the theife those differ as farre
As dothe your highe benche from this our lowe barre.

Otherwise in parte.
Ohe Sir betwene them theis differences are:
Thone sittes on the benche, thother standes at the barre.
