On Perpetual Remembrance Poem by Mystic Qalandar

On Perpetual Remembrance

How can I accept
that I was cast down from the sky to the earth?

I say:
I belong here.
I was made for here.
Here, the tree of my life puts down its roots.

When there was nothing—
no earth, no heavens, no distances, no time—
all of this came into being
for me,
for the vicegerent of God.

And yes,
I have lost my high station,
fallen from the Most Exalted
to the lowest of the low.

But why should I believe
that hope has no return?

I have fallen from my nature,
bound by the rope of the self,
its love is simple,
dangerous,
heartbreaking,
terrifying.

Why should I not believe
that I can master the commanding self?
Why not trust
that one day this voice will call me:

> "O tranquil soul!
Return to your Lord,
in a state in which you are pleased, and He is pleased with you.
Join My servants,
enter My Paradise."

There comes a moment
when the whisper of divine breaths is heard,
when a single cry of Return!
brings a smile to the lips of the spirit,
and the heart recognizes
that voice—
the one heard on the Day of the Covenant.

Is this the sign of the soul at peace?

For a long time I have driven the carriage of love,
yet I am still lost.
I cannot find the road that leads home;
on the way is a fork—
both paths call my name.

My map is blank,
my heart is simple.
You are to the right, you are to the left,
you are ahead, behind,
above, below.

How can I believe
that you have loved me
as I have loved you,
from eternity until now?
Or is this love of yours toward yourself,
and I only a barrier between?

I am a traveler,
wrapped in the mist of the journey,
stopping the carriage for fear of rain.
I fear that instead of the brake
I might press the accelerator,
that I might miss the stop sign
in time.

And then everything will end.

Yet your remembrance
takes up the greatest space in my mind.
How may I know
that I have loved you,
and that you have loved me?

Simply by this—
that your remembrance is eternal,
and this remembrance is my witness:

"So remember Me, and I will remember you.
Be grateful to Me and do not be ungrateful."
