Midnight!
I am perched on the edge of darkness,
infected with repetitive thoughts -
invading my mind
unsettling my sanity.
Uninvited guests!
No law in this mindful wilderness,
just vigilante justice
from the drug dealer-
(on prescription only) .
I am alone,
haunted by amplified memories from the past
and feature length fears for the future.
Through a portal I have unwittingly opened,
once repressed memories are liberated
with their dark demons and creeping decay.
A cacophony of voices harangues me
with conflicting instructions.
My body aches - with weariness,
driven from sleep by the nightmares.
Formless monsters loom behind me,
I feel their cold breath on my neck.
I am paralysed by indecision.
I should flee
but there is no obvious exit.
Religion has nothing to offer
and Science sees only my symptoms,
blind to a cause it does not believe in.
The incessant voices still invade my privacy.
It is now dawn.
The endless night is over
but the darkness remains.
Abandoned by my fellows
I try to fit the pieces of myself together
but there are so many gaping holes,
so much is missing.
It is raining outside, but I am drowning inside.
The suffocating walls are closing in.
Shackled by hopelessness
I await the final oblivion.
