Optimism/Insomnia Poem by Emilee

Optimism/Insomnia

What happens when that wall
wasn't meant to keep you out,
But rather, to keep something in?

What exactly is being retained?
My hopes? My dreams?
Why are they being suppressed?

Was my optimism for nothing?
Optimism for a hopeless cause is exactly that:
There is no hope, so why bother dreaming?

Optimism and dreaming go hand in hand,
Dreaming for no cause is a nightmare;
Dragging you down slowly, slowly

When the bottom is reached, you realize:
Who I am, who you are.
What my purpose is.

Tonight I cannot sleep.
