Passing Through Poem by Mary Champion

Passing Through

I never did believe in ghosts before,
now I'm not sure.
The night was dark and still,
no star or moon to light my troubled way.
I passed along the narrow cobbled street
with stumbling feet.
At first, I was alone,
or so it seemed.
Maybe I dreamed
the sudden sound of footsteps
from behind.
I turned to find
a figure fast approaching -
fleeing fear?
As it drew near,
I noted ‘twas a girl -
distraught of face,
seemed out of place,
her garments from an older age -
long past.
I thought to step aside to let her pass,
but e're I could
she disappeared.
I turned again to see her run ahead,
although I never saw that which she fled,
but she had passed straight through me
instantly,
as if I wasn't there.
Believe me if you dare,
for I never felt a thing
though I could see her presence clear as day
on that dark night,
when she took flight.
