Playback Poem by Mary Champion

Playback

Life has lost all flavour,
twilight haunts the noon,
suddenly I savour
a long-forgotten tune.

At once, I am translated,
back through the trials of time
and youth is recreated
inside this heart of mine.

The doors, once closed, are open.
Again, I'm free to choose,
but this time, with the Wisdom,
that brutal time accrues.

I view the road before me,
how wide it seemed, how clear,
I never dreamed how balmy
blue skies would disappear.

Transported by the music,
I rise above despair,
and hope, once so elusive,
breathes in restoring air.

Alas, the song has ended
and stolen youth away.
And time, that was suspended,
once more comes into play.

How arduous, how grievous
is this reality.
How sweet the brief release was
when music turned the key.
