(Oct.6,1944, Kroenke {Crvenka) , Serbia)
Across the pond, firecrackle, a handful of running soldiers
- hayrick first, barn and stoneface farmhouse-
and squatting round this flowery meadow,
looking on in silent amaze, these rugged peasant-farmers-
a petit shepherd girl only moving thing this side the pond,
stepping into water, setting the surface a-ripple,
bleating sheep on embankment leaning down to drink
drifting like reflected flocculant doppelganger in the watery sky.
