Psalm 74 Poem by Frank McEleny

Psalm 74

Oh Lord I look out at perpetual desolation
I see nothing but the blackness of the night
I hear the jackals howling in anticipation
And my sunken eyes behold this dreadful sight

The sun has set and shall it rise again?
Or has the nightly shadows won the day?
On every side they break and tear to pieces
And the reapers hand is never far away

I listen for a voice, nay, only silence
Total devastation is my only friend
He makes a feast of all I ever hoped for
And the hell lies in no knowledge of its end

And only at this point can I consider
Of all I took for granted every day
The beauty that has died and gone forever
Torments my soul and causes me to pray

Oh Lord forget me not for I have fallen
Fallen from the lofty heights of your embrace
My heart cries out, its pierced by many sorrows
As it languishes, it longs to see your face

I am your child on that alone I call thee
For I have squandered every morsel from your hand
And now I lay among the dead and dying
And I know that this is not what you had planned

Oh Father will you save me for your own sake
For darkness haunts the earth and cruelty reigns
Remember the apple of your eye and where I came from
Destroy the darkness and reverse its ghastly gains.
