Regret - Poem by Carole Miles

‘E were a man that lived under tha bridge…
not tha railway bridge
that’s tha one wi’ the bike lane along it
though I wouldn’t ride along there
I mean what if tha Eight Forty Express were coming along
an’ you wobbled
you’d be a bloody gonner……
no this were tha York Street Bridge
down by tha river
‘e told me a lot later
‘e’d moved there after ‘is friend caught fire
from tha train cinders

Well me friend Cecil an’ I
(Is mum gave him tha’ name cos she thought it were posh
which it is for a toff, but
it gave Jimmy an’ Barry Ogden
an excuse to thump him
which they did
till I became his friend an’
that put an end to that)
anyways……
we ‘ad skived off school an’ were fishing under tha bridge
cos no one could see us down there
when out of the gloom came this bloody big bugger
wearing a grey army great coat an’ gloves with no fingers

‘E yelled at us mad like
“what the ‘ell are you doing here”
well we was frozen in fear
an’ gibbered and blubbered
an’ almost pissed our pants as ‘e grabbed our ears
an’ when we told ‘im ‘e said
“you bloody little fools
get back to school…
look at me…. is this wha’ you want t’ be? ”
an’ we scarpered…sharpish
an’ never skived again

‘E became me friend..I spent no end of time
listenin’ to ‘im talkin’ ‘bout books an’ poems an’ classics
‘e opened up a new world ta me
an’ I did well at school…….
grew up an’ moved on
an’ as tha years passed
I forgot about tha man
under tha York Street Bridge

Me mam sent me tha local paper t’other day
Tha front page carried tha story of a man who’d drowned
when a flash flood swept through town
a recluse tha no one ‘ad much use for….so it said.
suddenly…. I was transported back
to all them years before
an’ tha realization…….that
‘e was my inspiration an
I wish I’d told ‘im that
but I never did

I couldn't figure out your wording for a minute, but then I realized it was some type of English accent. :) It was a really cool poem and a very awesome story. I really enjoyed it. Is it true, by the way? (Report) Reply
