Regrets - I've Got A Lot Poem by Mary Champion

Regrets - I've Got A Lot

Oh why couldn't I keep my mouth shut?
Why did I have to let on
those secrets I'd hidden for ages?
I let them all out- now you're gone.
Why couldn't I keep on pretending?
been vague about details and stuff.
Why didn't I spot the danger
and see that enough was enough?

Why did I think I could win any
argument when I could see,
your mind was set firmly in granite
and that's how it always will be?
Your faith is as blind and unblinking
as anything else set in stone,
there's no way that my brand of logic
could make any mark on its own.

And there's no one else in my corner,
there's no one to second my shot.
I haven't a snowball's proverbial
of making a dent in that block.
So why didn't I keep my mouth shut?
I had to keep going until
I drove you away for forever.
Oh why did I go for the kill?

I could have kept hedging and spinning
and blunting the points that I made.
And you'd have kept right on insisting
and putting your views on parade.
But at least you might still say you love me
and at least we could still be good friends.
Oh why couldn't I keep my mouth shut?
Is this how a perfect love ends?
