that day without his lips
that day i saw her love my father most

that day she loved him more
than she loved her neediness for him

without a sound from his mouth
like only those set free
of selfish love can hear
she could hear him say
he'd had enough of life

and in that instant she forgot
that unrelenting screeching in her ears:
ME!
for just long enough to stroke his pallid hand
then say: it's ok
for you
to go
