Ring Of Fire Poem by Mary Champion

Ring Of Fire

My wife once saw a film about a guy
who beat up on his wife and blacked her eye.
He made her tragic life a living hell
until she wondered why she ever fell
for somebody so selfish and so cruel.
She cursed herself for being such a fool.

CHORUS
You may think that you are stronger,
but I hold my grudges longer.
Just remember when you treat me
like a slave or even beat me-
just remember when your actions make me weep
that sometime, darling husband, you must sleep.

One night when he lay peacefully in bed,
she took a weighty Creuset to his head.
Then lit a ring of fire with him inside
and laughed in crazy triumph while he fried.

CHORUS
You may think that you are stronger,
But I hold my grudges longer. Etc

Well, I'm the nicest bloke there ever was,
but I wish she'd never seen that film because,
whenever she's displeased at what I do,
my wife hints very darkly that she too
would willingly encircle me in fire
then dance a merry jig around the pyre.

CHORUS
You may think that you are stronger,
But I hold my grudges longer. Etc

Whenever I step one inch out of line,
whenever she wants her way and not mine,
whenever she has hormones on the rise,
whenever she imagines I've told lies,
whenever she can burden me with blame,
she screeches that she's gonna do the same.

CHORUS
You may think that you are stronger,
But I hold my grudges longer. Etc

Fade - singing softly (with apologies to June Carter Cash)

Love Is a Burning Thing
and It Makes a Fiery Ring.
Scorned by my wife's ire
I woke up in a Ring Of Fire
