Along the bleak and winding shore,
where I have never walked before,
the crashing waves beat endlessly.
Below the racing, dark'ning clouds,
for all the world like wingéd hounds,
the wheeling gulls shriek eerily.
The fishy smell of seaweed hangs
and merges with the salty tangs
of spray blown in by fearsome gales.
The howling wind, the storm tossed sea
bring ancient legends back to me
and I recall the chilling tales
my father's father told to me,
as I sat spellbound on his knee,
all innocent of Nature's might.
Now I am old, as he was then -
and know the feebleness of men.
I fear for those at sea tonight.
