'See You Soon' Poem by Janine Alyssa Navarro

'See You Soon'

you bravely went to war
we used to sit on our favorite bench
sounds of bullets fired in the air
humming our favorite tune one afternoon
bombs exploded around you
tranquility had us as we held hands
you bravely fought every fear
to love me was all you lived for
you kissed our wedding ring and fought on
I embraced you, holding you close
blood was everywhere but my voice echoed
you kissed my forehead, you said you had to go
“retreat! ” shouted one of the soldiers
I hesitated to let go of your hand
running quickly, you had hope, soon you’ll be home
promising to come back, you said “see you soon”
falling to the ground, you got shot down
I waited, until you were finally in my arms again
you said my name with your last breath
you never came back
