Her veneer of sophistication
was beginning to fray at the edges
as the contrived design peeled away.
The sentimental kitsch
that underlay the refined façade
was becoming more obvious.
All the years of pretence,
denying her roots,
denying her true self,
were taking their toll.
Utter humiliation
was the payoff
for hypocrisy
and foolish pride.
She imagined the mocking laughter,
the pointing fingers
the knowing sneers
and snide sniggers.
But it was even worse than she had feared -
nobody even noticed the difference.
