Silks, No More Poem by hema ravi

Silks, No More

Rating: 5.0

In contemplation, she sat
recalling the events in her life.
Adorned with silk saris,
bedecked in gold and diamonds,
the glitz and glamour in her life.

‘Apsara’ or Demi goddess?
a ravishing beauty,
She had been the centre of attraction
forever receiving compliments about her silks
which she never failed to flaunt at the gatherings,
The charm and grace gone.

Cancer, the deadly disease
Into an abyss made her sink,
it also caused her to think
about the silkworms that had perished
to provide her with the alluring silks,
No longer were the silks pleasant.

Writhing in pain in the hospital bed
She had images of creepy, crawly insects
as if they were all over her body
smarmy, slithery, smelly, devouring her.
Three dimensional figures of the numerous silkworms that
had perished for her silks.

Her thoughts lingered and tormented.
Pain enables one to appreciate another’s suffering.
If she had a lease of life
She would give up wearing silks
and lead a life of simplicity.

The lure for silk had withered off
Silks, No More!
