Skin Poem by Veronika Scarlet

Skin

I spend countless hours sitting in the dark observing you
Your body lies motionless under the full moon
Your breathing so faint, I can hardly feel your chest move
I know it will stop soon, it will end soon.

And as I leave you on the grass
Vanishing, following a familiar path
I contemplate that time will pass
Although unhurried, perhaps.

The shadows sink me back in
Our songs dissipate into the wind
My frequently committed sins
Are never to replace my quixotic dreams.

Tonight the air is thick, cold, and stale
As I imagine your voice, your skin so pale
There is so much left for me to desire
But my heart insists to smother this fire.

May I hold your hand, for one last occasion?
And feel my soul's dance, oh so gracious...
Undoubtedly, I am to soon submerge
As a matter of fact, I'm back on the verge.

Solitude and darkness, places that I know
Await my return... for I am not strong
Your skin for once, icy as my own
Says “Goodnight, my love, so long, so long...”
