Sky Poem by Mary Champion

Sky

Nuit

Queen of Egypt's ancient pantheon;
Great Goddess of the Sky;
Mother of Osiris, the death defeating God.
Naked, but for a whirl of stars,
your arching form encompasses the Earth;
holds it in its place.
Your being shelters a million souls.
You hold the border between chaos and order-
protector of the dead.
Oh, great sky mother Nuit,
give refuge to me
that I may be counted among the imperishable stars.
You are the immortal haven
within which we can live eternally.

Chameleon Sky

Chameleon sky, ever-changing,
azure blue, sometimes dazzling
when bathed in sun's blinding light.
You don sombre garb for the night,
when clouds prevail
over star-spangled veil.

Then lightning flash and thunder roll,
shatter peace and wrench control,
until the washed out new day breaks
and pinkly blushing dawn-light takes
its place. Pure, pellucid blue and vast,
or shrunken, grey and overcast.
Light or heavy, storm tossed gales;
high white clouds and vapour trails.

At dusk the sky may burn like fire
as setting sun seeks to retire.
Rain and hail, or sleet and snow -
moods that change as seasons flow.
Heaven dons its winter grey
as summer sapphire fades away.

Far to the North and South in hiemal skies
a technicolour lightshow stupefies.
Shooting stars burn out in your embrace,
comets streak across your darkened face.
Planets, moons and stars act out their lives
upon the cosmic stage that you provide.
Deep sky, what lies beyond your day and night?
Are you contained or are you infinite?
