This morning I've been vexed about
the power of things I've never seen
Aye, ghosts: I think they're worth a shout
for being feared though quite unreal.
For not a single case pertains
of solid proof that phantoms creep
amongst us on this worldly plane,
though hordes of humans disagree.
Yet all we need is just the one -
a specimen beyond all doubt -
a rock hard sign the living can
expect new gear when life runs out.
The notion seems bizarre I'd say
but if it happened I suspect
that almost everything would change.
Religionists would rule again.
Astonished atheists like me
would scamper for the entrances
to overcrowded worship scenes,
and flurry of obeisances.
But probably I'd still contrive
to sit upon the doubting fence.
For now at least, it's all a jive
and I'm content to bet against,
