Something I Cant Forget Poem by Alejandro Torres

Something I Cant Forget

Sit outside in the early morning air
A black coffee over sweetened
By thoughts of you
And a sympathetic clutch of something
Something so familiar
So tangible I forgot how to describe it

I map the stars with a naked eye
While nostalgia runs a course through weathered veins
Wrapping itself around protruding bones
Weathered by thoughts of you
And how far the distance actually is
Creaking and cracking with time

I’ve lost youth and more thoughts of you
Than I don’t think I could ever remember
But I trace the stars
Like I used to trace the contours of your face
Across every battle field that was in the way
But on the nights like tonight
It all comes down and wraps around me
Like a blanket of familiarity
A blanket of something tangible
Something I forgot

I’ve plucked roses from thorn bushes
Held the fragrance on the tip of a breath
But I don’t remember
Your face when I gave you dying vegetation
When I gave you an overstated invitation
With your name neatly printed on the front
But I cant remember the bright times
Just the nice lines
You stated of telephone calls

And I watch the smoke drift from my lips into the night
Like the remaining thoughts of you
Lingering in the cornered recesses of this mazelike mind
I feel it wrap itself around my insides
Every breath I take in

Cigarettes and coffee
Coupled with stars and melancholia
With a soft smile you’d never see
And eyebrows drawn too tight together
Working overtime to help identify
That something so familiar
The special something so tangible

I take the last drag and hold onto the image
Of that girl under a window
The orchestra of emotion so loud
It hurt to look at you
The first kiss on your cheek
A beaut in a mini
With neon fishnet
You walking out and sealing my fate
What a devastating day

And as I exhale the world
Feeling comes back in a rush
A feeling of something I hold dear
A feeling of something tangible
For that morena who caught my eye
Maybe in this life
Or the last

I trace the patterns
The night sky with a naked eye
And I feel the breeze
Trace the contours of my face
Tinged with something
I can feel more than the tips of my fingers
And a cup gone way too cold to drink
As palpable as my heart beat
That feeling of love
Something I cant forget

Keeping me alive on cold early spring mornings
So obvious a blind man would see it
A love for you
