Sound Poem by Allison Barnett

Sound

there is so much noise here
it rumbles through me like an earthquake
and throws off my senses
the final bell chimes at long length
and i follow the newly freed shouts
as they echo through the halls
and suddenly disperse as we near the exit
my ears search for that familiar voice
sure enough 'sarah' is resounded in my mothers tone
i approach, smiling, and climb into the car
as usual, classical music plays,
blending harmoniously with the air
that whooshes through the open windows
and the sweet sound of birdsong
eventually no other engines can be heard
and all there is, is the warm breeze
gravel crunches; we are home
i race out, my footsteps quick and sure
on the softly mown lawn
the blades make a sighing sound
as i settle in among them
they rustle with pleasure
while my fingers thread through
i toss my head back and look to the sky
where the delicious sun shines into my milky irises
