Specialisation Poem by Mary Champion

Specialisation

I walked along the shore,
eyes downward cast,
and when I was intrigued
by something bright,
some uncommon pebble,
I stooped to take it in my hand,
subjected it to scrutiny until
I divined the secrets
of its nature
and wrote them in my book.

And so, I was - lifelong -
in search of Truth,
in search of the unknown
I could explain
and write it in my books.

But in old age I found
my aching back
needed to straighten.
I looked around.
And then it was a saw
a mighty ocean
of mysteries to solve.
I had no time
to write them in my book.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Inspired by Isaac Newton who said I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.
