Spring Answers To Me Poem by Henrietta Ezegbe

Spring Answers To Me

I stand as the law
of root and waking earth
spring answers to me

Custodian of
seed thaw and returning light
I open the gates
no force grants this season breath
I claim it and it begins

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem adopts a mythic, declarative voice to present spring as an act of will rather than inevitability. Through elemental imagery of root, thaw, and returning light, the speaker becomes both custodian and authority, positioned between stewardship and control. It draws on traditions that personify nature while also reflecting a human desire to claim agency over cycles that move beyond us. By framing renewal as something asserted rather than awaited, the poem invites reflection on power, voice, and the impulse to begin again.
