Stumbleman Poem by D A Phinney

Stumbleman

Stumbleman limping beside the bay
Never felt pain in quite this way
Where was she now when he needed her most
With someone other and he on the coast
Stumbleman's foot was hurting more
Since he left the highway and came to the shore
He looked at the bay and thought how to drown
Stumbleman stumbled and stumbled on down
He lay on a rock on the sand with his feet
He thought of her sour, he thought of her sweet
The pain was subsiding, the pressure was off
He cried a last tear, and tried out a cough
Stumbleman reached down and took off his shoe
And looked in the lining and knew what to do
He looked at the sole, it was tearing apart
He reached for the stone, and pulled out the heart
