The cloudy sky
makes it seem so dark
and really the hour's not late
it's not even quite eight
but the lack of sun reminds me
the summer
is drawing to an end
and I
haven't kissed anyone
well, anyone apart from my children
I think of grabbing a stranger
passing me by on the street
and planting one great big kiss
upon his or her cheek
then I think of the ensuing car chase
of the cops coming after me
for accosting a stranger
right there
upon the street
and I figure I'd better not
lest I end up
careening, crashing into a tree
(probably would too,
given my driving)
a little too high a price to pay
for a single kiss
on a late summer day
oh well,
if so it must be,
there'll be other summers
eventually
...perhaps I'll accost you then
