Away from you both night and day cannot
Diminish e'en one jot of summer's joy;
Remembered as if yesterday were here,
When barefoot and life's passions we'd employ.
Time was, our feet would dance about the grass
When heavy drops of dew dripped from each blade.
Our shadows waited for the summer sun,
While laughter echoed through the misty glade.
And all the day, such carefree time we had
To steal away and learn what e'er we would.
The secrets of the universe were ours,
Forever kept, as if we really could.
Then, off to bed the setting sun would go
And leave to us the moon in half disguise.
While fireflies remained in silent flight,
To witness there the saddest of goodbyes.
Then dragged the empty hours until again
You kissed my youthful cheek with lips discreet.
‘twould seem to be forever and a day;
Then, I was forced to leave our Love so sweet.
The longest day is now the darkest night.
And, though the moon is eager to console,
Not time, or force, or death itself will stop
The biding Love burned ever in my soul.
