Tears Well Poem by Richard Trembath

Tears Well

Tears well unto the eyes
Recalling yet
The happy times
Of long ago
Surrounded by the beauty
And simplicity
Of carefree youth;
Days in the sun
Without a care
Days when we still believed
The hazards of Life's road
Were not for us

But all that changed.
‘Twas gradual at first
As childhood drifted quietly away
And we became a part
Of Life's eternal river,
With its rapids, and the banks
Withdrew beyond our reach
As yet the swollen torrent
Bore us, rushing now,
Upon its breast
Towards the endless sea.

How sweet the memories
Of all that came before;
Before we realised
Those golden days
Were just a prelude
To what was in store for us, our destiny,
Our predetermined journey
From the fields of joy
The days of childhood innocence
Unto Life's dark reality.

Tears well, from deep within;
We shed them silently, in rivulets.
Tears well
In thinking of those well-remembered days,
The days of long ago,
That are no more.
