Teddy Poem by Alex Garr

Teddy

As the door closed with a gentle click
And the room was thrown into utter blackness,
The young boy cuddled up against
His teddy bear. As he felt the warm
Fur against his cheek, the boy’s heart
Stopped racing. In time,
He slipped into the world of dreams.

And from underneath the bed stirred Darkness.

Teddy sat up with a start.
The young boy was breathing deeply,
Still dreaming.

The Darkness seeped across the carpet,
Thickening into something solid,
A darkness blacker than the shadows.

Teddy, dressed in mail and half-helm with
Sword and shield in hand,
Looked about for the Darkness.

And Darkness rose.

It was a monster partway between
Solid and shadow. As its maw dripped
Fear and nightmares
And it raised a fearsome claw,
Teddy raised his gleaming blade.

And they battled into the night.
Shadows and cotton rained down
Like blood.

But all too soon came the light.

Darkness reared its head and roared
In despair. It retreated back under
The bed, defeated once more.

As the light from the dawn
Grew ever brighter,
Teddy quickly discarded his armor,
Sewed up his wounds, and
Crawled back into the crook
Of the young boy’s arm.
Teddy smiled as he
Successfully defeated the Darkness
Once more,
Keeping the young boy safe from the nightmares.
