Thank You For Who I Am Poem by Emmanuel Arunee Mwanza

Thank You For Who I Am

Thank you for who I am

I have heard you,
I have heard them
They always praise me,
at times they laugh at who I am
But I have heard you praise me
and at times laugh at me
I have hated myself,
I have hated the decisions that I make
I have hated how tall I am,
I have hated how short I am
I have hated my skin colour,
I have hated myself for being hairy
I have sweated myself to lose weight
and sometimes ate more than normal to gain weight
I have always wanted to be like someone else
Not even you,
yes not even you but someone else;
someone better
I have searched for the remedies to my life's lows,
my humanly imperfections
I only wanted to please everybody,
it did not work
I did not change to become perfect until I made peace with myself
I realized I was perfect by accepting
how tall, short, fat, thin,
or how hairy I looked
I realized I had you to thank
for who I am now,
the one who accepts who I am
So thank you for who I am
