The American Lie Poem by Steve Santerre

The American Lie

Banners and stripes, blues, reds and whites
States and counties, cities and sites
A nation in peril, a downhill slope
Debt and terror, war and peace
Fight enemy, never cease!

An illusion of freedom clouds them tight
Lost in lies, they do not know
Of the evils and the suffering, it’s all a show
The nickel, the dime, the dollar, it’s all mine they say!
Men and women playing the game, cheating, what a shame!

Greed, legalized and encouraged
The American Dream, the despotic regime
Give me healthcare, don’t tap my phones
Where’s my money, eh Dow Jones?
End the war, stop the fight
The Iraqis did nothing, aren’t I right?
The oil you dig for, the oil you die for
From the war in the gulf to the local gulf coast
You always make a mess in great excess

Bombing villages, civilians dead
Pointing fingers, why not apologize instead?
The CIA, assassins and spies, “protectors of freedom”,
Soldiers and killers, the same applies,

The cries, the horror, families torn
Not only one, but many, it’s a norm
Disparity breeds crime, and the system’s prime
To ensure its survival is a necessity
For controlling the masses, making them fear
To destroy, to corrupt, and to interfere.

The news, they feed, they stuff your brains
With useless facts, entertainment, the chains
They dumb you down, twist you around
The truth disappears, how profound!
But now you must face the music
Knowing all this, will you listen to Big Brothers tune
Or will you rise up to the bully and pop his balloon?
POP!
