The Boy My Dad Took With Him Poem by Emmanuel Ayeni

The Boy My Dad Took With Him

Timid and naive I was
When the glimmers began to fade
Right before my eyes, the light went off.

Two decades and still counting,
Waiting for the light to rekindle,
I found none, I saw it not.

The world felt so empty,
Just the three of my kind you left,
Just the second lantern that kept its oil.

It was a man in a boy,
Unacquainted with the art of boyhood,
While my hands bore the weight of days,
When years were yet to be understood.

Now I have accepted the fate of this phase,
That the light is never coming.
From then and forever,
Will I remain reminiscent.
