The Derry Maiden Poem by Liam ó Comáin

The Derry Maiden

The Derry Maiden

(For Sheila)

As the Autumn sun caressed
I met a maiden fair, strolling
Along Rossville Street
With an independent air.

I knew I had met my love
But our eyes failed to meet
Being but two of many
Along a Foyleside street.

But fate is a curious thing
And after years had passed
I met again this colleen -
My dark haired Derry lass.

Her beauty had blossomed
Into a gem so fair
And my love increased
As I won her love so rare.

We went and we got married,
It was in the month of May,
In a cathedral near the Bogside
On a bright and breezy day.

Now we are the parents
Of one girl and three boys
Oh sure coupled with Sheila
I have all my earthly joys.

Oh, fortunate are those who get to meet their true love!
