The Dipper Poem by Mary Champion

The Dipper

In his chocolate brown suit and white shirt front
the perky, plump dipper stands on the moss-covered rock,
emitting an air of anticipation -
bobbing up and down
to the rhythm of the rippling stream -
the cold, clear stream where he chooses to hunt.
Then he spots his prey-
Stonefly?
Caddis fly larvae?
No matter!
He walks into the water.
He walks under the water.
The rapid current does not deter him
as he boldly goes.
His third eyelid -
the transparent one - closes-
now he can see clearly in spite of the torrent -
-never loses sight of his target.
He emerges from the water - triumphant!
