The Golden Rot Poem by Peter Edigah OBIAJE

The Golden Rot

Greed consumes the soul
Gold grows on hearts
But the hunger never ends.

Truth hides behind a mask
Lies walk in clothes
Honour lies still in chains.

Betrayal laughs softly
Like a rose, with thorns
Trust quietly bleeds.

Slander flies away
With wings it takes good names
While the innocent weep.

Hate keeps its fire alive
In places where kindness dies
Ashes crown the arrogant.

The snake wears cloth
Its poison flows like honey
Sweetness brings our end.

A golden pit,
Where riches and goodness fight
Soul poverty wins.

The mirror sees it all
But pride shuts the eyes
Truth becomes a shadow.

Lies sit on the throne
Justice walks with a limp
The wear crowns.

The betrayers eat well
While loyalty drinks poison
And thanks goes hungry.

The tongue, a blade
Cuts graves under innocent names
Yet calls itself clean.

What is left of us?
Dust questions the gold,
Silence answers.
