The Incarnation Of Siduri Poem by nathan martin

The Incarnation Of Siduri

sitting at a well called
the sandy hut bar.

recessed illumination in the back
of my head draws out the characters
one by one.

my eyes flicker before the
incarnation of siduri.

she is drunk again and you can hear
the rain falling heavily on the roof.

i look up to view the bright citron
dragon painted on the ceiling winding
its way along the tiles.

i have flash backs of chinese dive bars
with extravagant tiny jade forest.

siduri somehow rising off the barstool
and walking out the door.

Hi Nathan of Oregon from Daniel of Minnesota (we both carry names of Hebrew prophets) You must have clicked on MORNING IN THE TAVERN just moments after I posted it, I was still typing its companion poems. I clicked on your SIDURI poem immediately upon seeing it, because the GILGAMESH epic is one of my essential companions. Your poem finds a contemporary embodiment of the ancient beer brewer of the gods, but I don't think the Siduri of the epic would get drunk! If I'm reading this right, the 2nd stanza says you're finding parallels for other characters as well in the tavern clientele. If the myths don't live inside of us (They do!) , then they are dead. Have you found a candidate for Gilgamesh himself? How about the serpent that consumes the Flower of Life?
