The Knee Upon A Neck - The Awakening Poem by Justine Vega

The Knee Upon A Neck - The Awakening

It took a knee upon a neck
To awaken the world to a heck
Of a cry from a people enraged
Long ill-treated because of race

George Floyd's gone to glory
Forever history will tell his story
Cause the knee upon his neck
A symbol of a people in wreck

In numbers they flocked
From every nook they rocked
In their chants they plead
For their blood that bleeds

Placards their plights recount
The world in sorrow reckons
It's time to make amends
To a people that need to mend

From a past painful and dark
A bondage that left its mark
Memories so vivid and deep
As many generations weep

Cries for justice like trumpets blast
From a neck that blew its last
And awaken the spirit of a nation
To re-build a new generation
