The Lonely Lifesaver Poem by Liam O'Brien

The Lonely Lifesaver

Upon the dreaded beach I sit,
Though few do share my fear of it,
Alone as though I am unfit
Or worthy to accompany.

My shame abounds in fearful strides
Away from coming waves and tides
That hide the sharks in their insides,
Just waiting to attack me.

The sand as well! How can I take
The beach with feelings I can't shake
That sand replaces each skin flake?
I can't believe you don't see.

If skin is dropped from hand or face
Then eager sand will come replace
The skin that's lost in every case.
How long do you think you'll be free?

Beaches have danger, fear is right
Of such a filthy, loathsome sight,
So I supervise it day and night
With no one to accompany.
