Its a person describing a dove from a distance... The man is fearful/dying due to war ('a troop of snowflakes' represents the troops) . The man tries to seek salvation in imagining the warmth of home but he's too cold/hurt and this loss of hope and peace in the world is shown through the dove disappearing at the end
