The Mother Watched Poem by Peter Elliott

The Mother Watched

Rating: 4.5

The mother watched with wonder
Was it really true?
Her little boy was walking
In his shirt of blue.

The mother watched in wonder
Was it really true?
Her little boy was standing
In his school uniform new

The mother watched in wonder
Was it really true?
Before the priest with his bride
Her son he said 'I do'

The mother watched in wonder
Was it really true?
At her grand-child's wonder
At the creatures of the zoo

The mother watched in wonder
At the angels round her bed
And in an hour and a half
What was left of her was dead

A baby watched in wonder
At her mother's face
All memories of her past life
Had gone without a trace.
